Android Final Fantasy

Dissidia is the last Final Fantasy game that I play in console. And that was so many years ago. With the rise of mobile gaming, it is just a matter of time before Final Fantasy joins the bandwagon. I am not interested in port version of the old games while spin off Final Fantasy titles tend to be rather bullshit. Surprisingly, currently there are 3 Final Fantasy games that I am (still) playing. I will just talk briefly about each of them.
1. Final Fantasy Record Keeper
I have been playing this for more than a year. I almost quit at one point but surprisingly, I am still playing it now. The game introduces a new character, Tyro, from a kingdom which keeps paintings of events from various Final Fantasy series to inspire peace and heroism to its citizens. Darkness falls upon the kingdom and the picture from these paintings start to fade. Tyro has to 'go' into the painting to take parts of the various events to restore the paintings. That is the background story.

The gameplay, however, has very little RPG aspect. The focus is on turn-based fights with characters from various Final Fantasy series to be used as the characters. The challenge, however, each character in the fight can only bring 2 skills with them. It is like a 'limit' that makes the game difficult but at the same time, it makes the challenge of the game is the strategising part: which characters to bring and which skills to equip. I personally see the game just to collect the characters while at the same time get strong equipments, play the missions and events, etc. Passing or failing or even skipping the events has no bearings whatsoever to the story. So it is really a casual game for fun.

The RNG for the strong weapons is shit as I keep getting shit and that is the thing that makes me wanna quit at times. However, the game is pretty generous with mythril (which is the currency to draw the random weapons) and I have yet to spend any real money. The game difficulty is quite steep at the high end as even having the maxed out characters and their unique weapons may not guarantee you to beat the strong bosses.

Tyro is mediocre: average on all stats but yet able to equip all weapons and all skills. While he may be easily overshadowed by native FF characters, he carries the most useful skills, Sentinel's Grimoire, which makes him still relevant character. That is one thing that I think the game does well. Tyro is not neglected while they continue to milk from nostalgia of the other FF characters.
2. Final Fantasy Brave Exvius
Final Fantasy Brave Exvius introduces 3 main characters: Rain, Laswell, and Fina. It has a nice CGI render of these characters and I am a sucker of eye-catching graphics. This really feels like an RPG as it includes travelling at the world map, at the dungeons, on top of the battling. Despite the emo faces at the CGI images, these 3 characters are actually big jokers. Their interactions in the game are very funny, ridiculous, and tend to be silly which make the overall feel of the story somewhat light hearted. That's a good job to deviate from the typical emo and brooding FF characters.

The turn-based battle is also more true to typical FF as each characters will get stronger and learn more skills as they level up. Sadly, the game maker seems to be more eager to cash in from the characters from other FF series. Rain, Laswell, and Fina are significantly more useless than the native FF characters and you may end up with a party of native FF characters and completely forget that you are playing a different game altogether. What a waste since they have 3 interesting original characters already.

The progress with the story is rather slow so the gamemaker try to make us busy with side quests which are not relevant to the main story. It gets grindy and repetitive to repeat the same dungeons all over again just to collect x number if items or to defeat x number of enemies.

I have stopped playing this although I have not deleted it from my tablet. At the beginning, I enjoy the dungeon exploration as it really reminds of me of the traditional RPG games in which I can control the characters to move to which direction etc. However, due to the grindy nature, I find it too time consuming. Perhaps I am also getting old and getting shorter attention span that I prefer playing something that I don't need to stare so much on the screen. I feel quite sad for this game because I think it has a lot of potential as an original standalone FF game but yet it falls into the trap of being cash machine milking native FF characters and neglect everything original from this game.
3. Final Fantasy Mobius
Final Fantasy Mobius introduces Wol in the world called Palamecia (no idea why they choose the name of the empire in FF 2). The world is in the verge of destruction by Chaos and Wol goes on to a journey to fulfill the prophecy to be the Warrior of Light to save this world (sounds similar to FF 1).

I am enthralled with this as the graphics are insanely awesome for a mobile game although on the negative side is that it is draining the battery. Although it is an RPG, the focus is more on the fighting and strategising as the story is quite linear and the exploration of the map only involves clicking from one point to the next.

The battle system is confusing at start but once I get the hang of it, it is quite enjoyable. The battle system stems from Final Fantasy job system. There are 3 basic jobs: warrior-type (strength or defense type), mage-type (magic type), and ranger-type (agility or critical damage type) and all the more advanced jobs are based on any one of these. Each job can wield 3 elements and only skills belonging to the elements can be used, rather than the job type i.e if your job can wield fire element, you basically can use all types of fire cards.

The battle is action-based which is interesting at the start but get boring with the same grunting sound effects. That 'auto' function is a blessings as the AI is damn smart. Does it make the game boring? Not really. Because for some of the more difficult battles, controlling Wol manually may still be preferred. Yep, no matter what AI still cannot beat human intelligence.

I honestly got bored of this game quite quickly but recently Mobius becomes my favourite. It is frustrating if you are a completionist because there are so many jobs and so many skill cards but the resources to have them all is very limited. Having said that, there is no necessity to become a completionist. I am still playing with the ranger basic job and I am still doing fine. My cards are mediocre too.

But I am such a sucker for graphics, seriously. Different jobs have different costumes and I like this gimmicks. Lol. Mobius is really crazy in the sense that even for the event scenes, what Wol wears depends on the job that you currently equips. It is that 'personalised' instead of using a standard template. Haha.. Although usually I like magic type of characters, I hate mage jobs here as they all wear mask and I can't see the face. I like ranger best as the clothes are the skimpiest. Haha.. When the game was announced, it created quite a ruckus about how sexy Wol is. Yes, the warrior and ranger clothes are too skimpy and not battle-proof. The warrior wear heavy armors but their back is exposed (silly right?) while the ranger has exposed torso.

Multiplayer mode was introduced about 3 weeks ago and I am impressed even when I lose my connection, when I login back to the game again, I can still go back to the the real-time battle. Usually for internet based multiplayer games, once a player is disconnected, that's it.

That's all from me :) It is pretty clear that currently Mobius is my favourite and I hope the developer can keep it at the right track.

Latest anime books!!

It's been a long while since I wrote about my anime book collections. In fact, when I went home in April, I took pictures of all my anime book collection but I have yet the time to upload and show it off here. Well, today is still not the time. As I was tidying up my treasures, I finally decided to write about the few books which I bought for the past few months. Too lazy to take pictures on my own so the pictures here are taken from a lot of places around the net.

Firstly, Hikaru no Go Illustration Book [Sai]. This is an oversized and gigantic artbook measuring 37cm x 26.5 cm. When it first came out, I was still a poor dumb student who thought $100+ something for an artbook was too much. My threshold during that time was still $50-$60 per book. I even bought the bootleg version (shame on me!) as a compensation. The bootleg is in Indonesia so I am unable to compare how it fares against the original. I finally got this book from Yahoo! Japan for $60.66 including shipping and middleman service. Good price so I have no right to complain about the dust jacket which is not up to my "good" standard. But still, what's the meaning of few dollars? If I bought the book first-hand initially, I am sure I will still own a book which is still in top condition. Anyway, this book is quite interesting: the pages run from 0 from both front and back covers! They meet at the center at about page 90. The art and drawing inside are gorgeous. My only complain is that the actual hard cover is just plain white! Meh..
Next book will be xxxHolic Kocho no Yume artbook. I almost missed this but I can proudly say that I bought the last available copy in Singapore's Kinokuniya!! Haha.. The book is simply: orgasmic! On the surface, it looks disappointing with an external cardboard box with a large picture of Yuko and a large picture of Watanuki at the other side. Yes, cardboard material does not justify the high price tag of 6900 yen. But hey, don't judge a book based on it's external box. Inside the box, there is a three-way hardcover material with Yuko (the picture below). Upon opening, beneath it is Watanuki. And wait.. this three-way hardcover material is not even the book cover!! It forms sort of a cage and the actual book is still inside.
The actual book cover is sort of a disappointment after the gorgeous Yuko and Watanuki book cage. However, it fits the traditional Japanese theme. The paper also has this funny Japanese smell which I commonly smell from old books I imported from Japan. Haha.. The first half is full-colour illustration while the second half is black and white illustration. To be honest, words do not do this book justice!! Seeing is believing but I am too lazy to take picture. Haha..

I can't remember how much exactly I paid for this but in total I spent $129.20 for the book and New Prince of Tennis TV Animation Official Visual Book. I am not particularly fond of buying books with digital artwork from anime. But with a lack of Prince of Tennis artbook (as far as I remember, I can only recall Prince of Tennis 30.5) and the fact that Prince of Tennis is one of my favourite anime, it was a no brainer for me to buy. Ah, I did not remove the price tag for this ($37.50). With 20% sale, you can calculate back the price of xxxHolic book. Anyway, as per usual TV animation book, there is nothing much worth mentioning about this.
Next is Fairy Tail Illustrations -Fantasia-. I love Hiro Mashima's artwook in Rave but I find a lot of changes with his style with Fairy Tail. While the drawings inside are fantastic: hand-drawn and fully coloured, my enjoyment is ruined because of 2 factors: the oversexualisation of the female bodies and the exaggeration of male abs. Too many pictures of ladies in "compromising" poses and the lack of clothes make this book more like a "soft-porn" art rather than an anime/manga artbook. A bit sad actually. He is talented (good writing and good drawing) and I suppose he will be as successful without sexualising the ladies. However, in the end I still think that this is a $33.94 well spent. Haha..
Back to another book which I already own the bootleg version: Dear Boys. I was not being stingy when it first came out. I did not buy it because I was still oblivious to the manga back then. Haha.. Yup I bought the bootleg for about $20+ and guess what, I bought the real one for $28.91 inclusive shipping! Ridiculous isn't it? Content-wise, there is actually no issue having the bootleg. Haha.. However, the original trumps the bootleg with the cover. You see the picture of the cover below? The actual book cover is actually full grey in colour. The picture of Aikawa is actually on the transparent plastic dust jacket! Heh! Cool.. This was released during the first Dear Boys series. With the manga reaching Act III now, I think it is just time for Hiroki Yagami to release another artbook. If he does, this time I will definitely buy the original right from the start!!
Moving on to my favourite series now: Gundam Wing. With Endless Waltz ended more than a decade ago, I totally never expect there will ever be any Gundam Wing artbook. I was jumping with joy when I saw Gundam Wing Sunrise Art Works TV Series. But I was too late.. only 3 months late and the book was already sold out in many places. Surprisingly, I never even saw it in Kinokuniya! Bah.. I was on the brink of giving up when I saw eBay sellers were selling at USD80-100+ when the original retail price was only 3800 yen. I was very lucky that I could manage to snag one from Hobby Link Japan with original retail price! Yay.. $62.34 gone in total. The book is purely in black and white and the content is all sketches. I am being biased here but no complaint about that as I bought it simply because it is Gundam Wing! Haha.. But to be more objective, it did not reach the "orgasmic" level like xxxHolic artbook did! Lol..
I imported Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle Character Guide I and II from Amazon.com. I am not a big fan of Tsubasa but I am totally confused about the story so I suppose these books will be able to help me understand the manga better. The 2nd book was on Bargain Price from Amazon so it was dirt cheap. Amazon claimed that Bargain Price books are over-stock from supplier and not second-hand items from customer. It was rubbish! When it arrived, the condition was atrocious. Bleah.. No issue with the volume I. Luckily, Amazon refunded me the price of the first book (the non-bargain price one) and the shipping so my faith in Amazon was restored! Haha.. The books itself are so-so. And I don't know why the size of the first book is about A5 while the second one is more of a B5. Simply weird.. And nope, the book did not help me to understand the story better. I need to re-read from the first book when all volumes had been released in Indonesia. Anyway, $15.61 for both books, I should just suck it up.

I reach the final one which just arrived today: Valkyrie Profile Material Collection. I did not buy when it was first released for the same reason as why I did not buy Hikaru no Go. Lol. Shame on me! It set me back about $70 I think. But lucky me, the condition is near mint, unlike the Hikaru no Go. The item consists of 2 books housed in a slip case: the first one is illustration book and the second one is more like the game walkthrough. Similar to xxxHolic, I thought this book was "orgasmic" too! Haha.. The art is damn good (for sure!) but its bonus point is: reminiscence of my teenage years. Oh yeah!! Why didn't I buy this earlier? Haha..
These are all my latest loot. Hmm.. come to think of this, I am quite shocked: I bought all of these within April-May only!! ZOMG.. No wonder how I run out of money so quickly.. Haiz..

Final Fantasy 25th Memorial Ultimania

I received the item in January but I only had the chance to "rant" about it as I was very upset regarding the prices etc. At that time, I quickly flipped through the pages to screen for any damages or missing pages. From then, it has been stored nicely in a box until today when I decided to open and enjoy it leisurely. After all, it set me poorer by $275.13 so I might as well enjoy it.

Ultimania books are essentially game guides but this set is an exception. This set is essentially a collection of concept arts from Final Fantasy I to XIV, excluding the spin-off games. There are 3 volumes with volume 1 covering FF I-VI, volume 2 covering FF VII-IX, and volume 3 covering FF X-XIV. As expected, some games are given more "love" by Square Enix. Haha.. Below is the approximate number of pages for each game.

FF I: 30 pages
FF II: 50 pages
FF III: 50 pages
FF IV: 60 pages
FF V: 60 pages
FF VI: 75 pages
FF VII: 120 pages
FF VIII: 80 pages
FF IX: 120 pages
FF X: 100 pages
FF XI: 50 pages
FF XII: 70 pages
FF XIII: 90 pages
FF XIV: 10 pages

As time and technology progresses, the games and thus the books are also getting better in terms of artwork and content. My favourite is the 3rd volume as there are more CG concept arts. The concept arts for the locations and environment are breathtaking. Game-wise, I love FF X's arts the most. The pencil sketches are very "clean" and look very similar to the eventual CG arts. I am a bit pissed that my favourite game, FF VIII, gets the least exposure in the volume 2. This alone is a good reason for me to feel that the whole set is a disappointment for me.

As FF III and FF IV have been remade for Nintendo DS initially, the CG-version of these characters are also featured here. I think it is time to remake (not re-release!) FF I, II, V, and VI. FF Dissidia gives a glimpse of the main characters and main villains from these games in the modern CG animation. It will be awesome to see all the characters in the CG version.

It's time for pictures. None of the pictures is mine as my camera and my lighting sucks for taking picture of books.

The "special" bonus for buying the 3 books as a set from Square Enix Japan: the slipcase -_-
Front side of the slipcase
The back side of the slipcase features the logos of each games. Unfortunately, I am unable to find any high quality picture of the back side.
Covers of the books with their respective "obi"/belt

Covers of the books when the "obi" is removed

When the external covers are removed, these gorgeous images are not found on the hardcover of the books. The hardcover of the books only have the prints which are covered by the "obi". The back covers of the books only bear a small Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary logo so nothing is spectacular about it.

This picture looks big here but it is damn tiny on the back cover!!
No pictures of the content as I think nothing is spectacular about the content. This is not because I am being biased and sore for the less-than-expected coverage of FF VIII. Haha.. Anyway, right from the beginning, there is no way this set can be satisfying. After all, how is it be possible to condense 25 years of history and artwork into a mere 1000 pages??

Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary

I am slow to realise that this year is a special year for Final Fantasy fans as the series is celebrating its 25th anniversary. I came to first now about this when my friend posted about Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Ultimate Box on my facebook last month. The collection consists of all Final Fantasy games from I to XIII (excluding the prequels and sequels), a special video to commemorate the 25th anniversary, artbook, soundtrack disks, and the best part in my opinion: a visual and stand by Yoshitaka Amano. The rumoured retail price is 35000 yen and it will be released on 18th December as the first Final Fantasy game was released on 18th December 1987.
The stand with original artwork for the 25th anniversary
As good as it sound, it is likely that I would give this a miss. The reason is that the main "bulk" of the set i.e the games would be unplayable. FF I-IX are released for PS1 and by now my PS1 is dead. FF III is an exception because it is rumoured to be released as an UMD for PSP (although I think it would be PS Vita, rather than PSP). FF X-XII and FF XIII are for PS2 and PS3 respectively, which I do not own.

Anyway, below is the promo video.. Yum yum..

To celebrate the special occasion, there are still other things such as mugs, tumblers, mini towel, chocobo plushie, postcard set, and playing card set. Many were released early this year and were already sold out by the time I knew about them 2 weeks ago.

The only thing I managed to buy is the playing cards set. To be frank, nothing sensational about it. Well, how "great" a playing card set can be? I bought it more for "sentimental" values. Haha.. I bought 2 sets for 1080 yen each. The hearts and spades are good as they form a complete Dissidia and FF logo sets. The clubs and diamonds, however, are disappointing. It seems that they just find any pictures to make up the respective cards without any "theme".

The packaging box
Club.. I thought all would be guardian forces -_-
Diamond.. The worst set for me. Why is the special treatment for certain FFs only?
Heart.. a.k.a Dissidia set
Spade.. Final Fantasy logos

Jokers.. and the back of every card
Since the topic is about Final Fantasy, let me also comment on Theathrythm Final Fantasy game. Very very sad that it is a Nintendon 3DS game :( Sigh.. I can never imagine playing a rhythm/music game related to Final Fantasy.. Perhaps this would be the one and only of such genre ever created and I will not be able to enjoy it.. Sad.. Despite the skepticism, I am quite curious about this game. After all, Dissidia is a huge HIT for me, although initially people doubt that Square Enix would be able to make something good in the non-RPG world. Thus, I am expecting that this would excite me as much as Dissidia.

Sayonara my Playstation 1

Everyone in the house, except me, is garbage collector. They like to keep things which are no longer working, useful, fit, etc. I am infamous as the "rich" guy who always throw away things. That is only PARTIALLY true. I am extremely loyal to my items provided that they are not broken yet (or can be fixed if already broken) and I am foreseeing a future in which I am making use of them.

Today is an extremely sad day for me. After so many years, I finally played my PS1 again. You do not see the a wrong number there. Yes is is a ONE, not a 2 or a 3. I am glad that it is still working. However, I am extremely sad to find that the joystick is dead. Sigh, if only I played it on previous holidays, perhaps I would still be able to get a replacement :(, just like how I managed to replace the A/V cable.

I actually still have another joystick. I regret why I did not buy more that time. Sigh.. Where is the fun to play Chocobo Racing alone :( The other joystick was for player 2. Yes, for my sister. It is funny how the 2P controller which is hardly played got spoilt very quickly and this is like the 3rd or the 4th one. The 1P controller, ironically, has never been replaced yet. Yup, that 1P controller is mine right from the first time. It is a miracle that it survived my rough manhandling for such a long time and only died when neglected for few years.

I tried searching on local forums and shops but nil. Not even a second hand one. There are some on eBay but the price is really not worth it :( Together with the shipping, it is almost $15. Buying a second hand PS1 full set is about $25. No I am not planning to get another set just to get the controller. I'm left with 2 options: fix my spoilt one or beg and hope that some of my friends donate their still-working-but-not-played controller anymore. I *think* I saw some shops in Pontianak still selling PS1 controller. Not sure if they are really for PS1. I am banking on my cousin to help me, or perhaps my sister is she is travelling there soon.

Anyway, I think I need to learn to let go these material things. Nothing lasts forever. Sigh.. Next on the list is my cassettes :( The cassette player is like half dead. Pressing the "play" button is like a lottery. It may take numerous tries before the cassette really plays. Haiz..

The hard thing is really the sentimental value. Not that as if I still have so much time to play my PS1 anymore. But oh well, I got it in 1999 (I still kept the original receipt! Zomg!). It is more than 10 years old already. It is a teenager now. Its childhood accompanied my teenage years.. Very difficult to just say goodbye.. When it is time to throw it, I believe my mum will tease me "Imagine if all these are money, you can keep it and use it now". Personally, I prefer these to money. After all, they filled my growing years. And all that memories are priceless.

Picture time.. Pardon the lousy focus. Too lazy to settle the dumb phone.
Not bad for something which is almost 13 years old right?
Except for the A/V cable, everything is what came from 1999. Yes including that blue plastic wrapper and the PS wrapper. Gamesharks were donation from a cousin.
GOSH! I still have the receipt. Bought in 30/05/99 for Rp 1.360.000,-
Actually my dad and sister bought it for me as a surprise. And my sister chose 15 lousy free games
Memory cards #1, #2, #3, #4, that's how I remember them. The bottom ones are gifts from my cousin in US. I think the 2 without tags are still empty.

Lunar Silver Star Harmony

Graphics
It may not have the best graphics in PSP but considering this is a remake of PS1 (Lunar Silver Star Story Complete) and GBA (Lunar Legends), I consider this fantastic. Unlike Square Enix games whose improvement over the previous games are not that obvious, this game feels like a brand new game, rather than a remake. The graphics for the whole game is completely overhauled, except for the event scenes which retain their "old-school" anime style. The reasons why I call this a complete overhaul is that not only the graphics is upgraded, the towns and dungeons are also remade. It feels like visiting different towns and dungeons. While the in-game graphics is 2.5D, they keep the character icons etc as 2D :) And with the nice bright colours used, it is just nice to see and play.
 Burg in Silver Star Harmony.

Burg Spring (top) and Alex's House (bottom) in Lunar Silver Star Story Complete (left) and Lunar Silver Star Harmony (right). Doesn't it feel like a completely different game?

Gameplay
It retains the same gameplay as the older games. Click any of the desired actions, choose the enemy, and depending on the distance, you may or may not reach the enemy. There is another feature which allow players to "save" certain configurations. So rather than selecting attack 5x for 5 different characters, we can preset the characters to all "attack" mode and just select auto for that round.  This can be costumised to any particular magic or any particular skill and not only limited to "attack", "defend", "magic". Unfortunately, if this feature is used, players have to rely on the AI to select the enemies and sometimes the AI is just not as smart as human. So expect that 1 round is wasted because the AI selects the unreachable enemies at the back or selects the wrong enemy in a way that an AOE (area of effect) attacks only hit 1 enemy. And nope this is not the same as selecting "AI". In AI mode, players have no control in what action the characters perform.. They can use physical attack, magic attack, skills, or defend up to the AI decision.

Battle scene from Lunar Silver Star Story Complete (left) and Lunar Silver Star Harmony (right).
Lunar Silver Star Harmony offers additional yellow bar a.k.a special attack gauge bar.

The special attack from Lunar Legends is retained here. As we attack the enemies, the special attack gauge will slowly fill. And upon completion, special attacks can be performed once. After that the gauge is empty and needs to be filled again. It is not particularly useful but it helps to a certain extent.

There is no longer inventory limit and this makes the game much easier. Previously, each character can only carry 7 items so managing inventory can be quite a headache, especially with regards to HP and MP filling items. Now, there is a common/party inventory so each item can be kept up to 99 :) Not that this is very important because somehow the difficulty level is much easier in this PSP version. I hardly need to use or shop for the items.. Simply collecting them from enemy drops and they just continue to pile up.

Nall is extremely predictable here. He will definitely clear every status ailments and revive KO-ed characters at the end of every battle. That will save lots of items as well. However, in the middle of battle, he does not actually do anything. If I don't remember wrongly, in PS1 version, Nall may revive someone randomly in the middle of ongoing battle. And it is not a guarantee that he will revive and clear bad status from every characters. Again, if I don't remember wrongly LOL.

There is a big issue with the loading time.. It is way too laggy.. Any change of locations (like entering a room), the screen will black out and the music stops for a few second.. This will get very frustrating. Similarly with the load times to initiate a battle. To make things worse, the enemies here are more aggresive and more difficult to avoid. Perhaps it is also because the dungeon are simplified that players have less area to manouver. And to top it up, the battle is frustrating because of the load time everytime characters or enemies perform their special skills or magic. Blah!

Another thing that I despise is the inability to walk on the world map. Instead, players only choose the location and the characters "run" to that place. Although there is no random battle in the world map, I find walking around in world map is an integral part of an RPG so it kinda feels weird with being unable to walk around.

Features/Replayability
As an old J-RPG, the game focuses mainly on the story. There is no filler plots, useless subquests, or hunting certain items. There is no need to grind for level as well. To me, this is the strength of J-RPG. The story! There are bromides (images) to collect and they are missable! Yes.. but there is no special difficulty to get them but they can only be acquired within short period of time. For example before travelling from town B to town C, there may be a need to go to town A first to get the bromide. If you realise it once reaching town C, then can say bye bye to the bromide and move on hahaha... When playing in PS1 for the first time, this is the reason why I need to replay the game. But based on that experience, now I make sure that I follow the guide and there is no need to replay.

There will be an item called "Rememberiser" which allow us to watch every single anime cutscenes in the game. So again, there is no need to replay to watch these scenes anymore.

One interesting feature is about the conversations with NPCs. Unlike typical RPGs, the conversations with NPCs constantly change according to the storyline. After you proceed to the next town and clear the events there, when you go back to the previous town, the NPCs sort of know what happen in the other town and their conversations change. That makes talking to NPCs interesting.. something which I usually skip in other RPGs lol. Unfortunately, the bad translation makes me cringe sometimes o_0

Storyline
Nothing much changes in the main plot. Perhaps there are a few differences regarding how players meet Nash etc. Other than that, more or less everything remains intact. There is a bonus storyline about the Four Heroes at the start of the game. I have a rather mixed feelings about this. On one side, it is a good addition to let me know about Dragonmaster Dyne whom Alex admires. And it is nice that this plot (about 15minutes) is presented as bedtime story for Alex. It also serves as tutorial for the battle system.

On the other side, the additional plot feels incomplete. There is no further mention of Eiphel and the 5 princes of Black Star. And the personality of young Lemia Ausa is waaay to different from the one we meet in the game. Well, at least there is something different from the previous ones eh.

Music/Audio
This is the area in which Lunar games are legendary. The audio tracks are completely remade :) It is still the same music but with the remake, it complements the feeling of the graphics. The magic is still there!

However, the voice acting is terribly horribly sucky! Grr.. They should just keep everything from Lunar Silver Star Story complete. They even change the lyrics of the opening song and Luna's boat song. Jeez.. not to mention that everyone is speaking like bullet trains here.. A big big disappointment. It is so weird to see a guy voicing Nall (supposedly a prepubescent dragon boy) and Luna sounds a bit masculine here (yucks!). Thanks to Luna's voice actress, she no longer has the image of innocent nice girl here. She sounds so bossy, irritating, and aunty-like. Ew..

Overall
As a Lunar fan, this is a nostalgia. It is not perfect, but I still love it. Thanks to newer games which usually only have few hours of storyline and many more hours for nonsense, when I play this, I feel like the game is very looong.. Haha.. I feel tired as if Alex's journey is really never ending. It spans more than 20 hours of solid gameplay (no filler, no subquests, a bit of grinding). But perhaps my frustration is also stemmed from the lag times which can completely destroy the whole gaming experience. The voice acting is butchered but thank goodness the awesome music remains.

And as much as I would like to complain, I have to applaud this remake. When I play other remake games, I feel that they are just re-port. I am basically playing the same game just in different console. This is especially typical for square enix games which retain the old graphics and just add few FMVs and label them remakes. For Lunar Silver Star Harmony, I feel that I am playing a completely new game! It is not graphic improvement but it is graphic makeover. Totally fresh. With lower difficulties, I can completely focus on the story.. Add the bonus plot in the opening and that makes me feel that this is a perfect RPG which focuses mainly in the story :D
